Place & story
A new church at Laghey
Laghey Methodist Church opened inMarch 1905, replacing the congregation’s 1840 building at Dungorman, which had become unsafe. The Tyrone Constitution reported that Robert McIlroy of Moyroe supplied the new site. Hobart and Heron of Dromore designed the church and William Burnett of Dungannon built it in Carland freestone. By the opening, supporters had raised £800 towards the reported £1,100 cost. [2]
Gifts and an opening celebration
The new church also carried a transatlantic family connection. Members of the Bradley family in New York gave £100 for a vestry in memory of their father, who had worshipped in the old church. The opening brought a large congregation to Laghey for a service led by Wesley Guard of Belfast. Afterwards, the women of the congregation provided tea in a marquee in a neighbouring field, followed by a public meeting in the church. [2]
Children researching the past
On 31 January 2017 Laghey Primary School hosted the launch of Across an Open Field, a publishing project involving children from ten schools across Ireland. Laghey pupils worked with artist Ann Donnelly, writer Mary Branley and Dungannon Library. Over two years, the participants investigated events and family histories from 1912–22, connecting local research with the wider history of the period. [3]
