Place & story

Rugby at the crossroads

David O’Keeffe’s contribution to Grange: Past and Present recalls a Holycross rugby club playing in blue and white during the 1930s. Matches took place in O’Loughlin’s field, with a roadside shed serving as changing accommodation near Reardon’s public house. Captain Jim Barry brought Munster experience to the team. O’Keeffe also records Ted Russell’s recollection of accepting Barry’s invitation to make a guest appearance after they travelled home from a Munster match. [2]

Cards at Reardon’s

Reardon’s also appears in Michael Barry’s account of his father Tony, a local farmer and sports supporter. Sunday evening games of forty-five brought Tony and Paddy Sheehan together with players from Grange, Fedamore and Lough Gur. The recollection gives the crossroads public house a place in the district’s ordinary social life: a regular meeting point sustained by neighbours travelling in from the surrounding countryside. [3]

Fifty years of association football

Holycross AFC marked its fiftieth anniversary on 27 May 2017 with a gathering at Bulgaden Castle Lounge. Players from the 1967 and 1977 teams received commemorative medals, with deceased players represented by relatives or friends. The anniversary report also celebrated promotion to the Premier League in the 2016–17 season. Its account brings together the founding generation and later teams, documenting the continued importance of organised football in the Holycross community. [4]
