Place & story

Classrooms above the schoolmaster’s home

Nicker National School’s historical account places an Erasmus Smith school at the crossroads in New Pallas in the 1820s. The schoolmaster’s accommodation occupied the ground floor, with teaching rooms above. Patrick Johnson Sullivan and his wife were appointed master and mistress, and the master had two acres of land available for his use. [2]

A group of former public buildings

Limerick County Council’s 2016 record lists the former Erasmus Smith school in Garrane More under New Pallasgreen. The same settlement group includes a former RIC barracks in Garrane More and the public house named P. O’Dwyer in Garrane Beg. These entries locate a cluster of educational, policing and commercial buildings within the newer village. [3]
