Place & story
The Drakestown setting
The Placenames Database places Boharby in Drakestown townland, within Kildemock parish. Samuel Lewis’s 1837 account names Drakestown as the residence of N. Manning and records a constabulary station there. He describes the surrounding parish as predominantly cultivated land, with a limestone quarry and no waste or bog. His account also identifies a Catholic chapel at Drakestown. These are records of the townland and wider parish that provide context for the smaller settlement name, rather than separate evidence for buildings at Boharby’s mapped centre. [2] [3]
A small townland population
The 1911 census recorded fourteen people in Drakestown townland, down from sixteen in 1901. Three houses were occupied and one was unoccupied. Eight residents were male and six female. The figures describe the whole townland containing Boharby; the census table does not provide an independent population for the named settlement. They nevertheless establish the small scale of the community at the beginning of the twentieth century. [4]
