Place & story
From New Bridge to Canningstown
The village’s nineteenth-century name commemorates the Canning family. Pádraig Ó Cearbhaill’s account of the placenames archive compares the 1835 Ordnance Survey map, which marks New Bridge beside a cluster of houses, with the revised namebook of 1878. The later record attributes the change to the proprietor, Lord Garvagh, who named the village after his surname. Its approximate dating should not be treated as a precise foundation year. [2]
A surviving village water pump
At Tullylorcan, the national architectural inventory records a cast-iron water pump dating from about 1880. Its banded circular shaft rises to a fluted head and domed cap, while the spout has a projecting lip for a bucket. This small piece of street furniture preserves the practical equipment of water collection within the village. [3]
The Bridge Tavern as a theatre venue
The Bridge Tavern was included in Livin’ Dred’s six-pub Cavan tour of Poguemahone, scheduled for 1 October 2026. Aaron Monaghan performed Patrick McCabe’s work under Padraic McIntyre’s direction. The company’s programme connected Canningstown with venues in Shercock, Redhills, Mountnugent, Swanlinbar and Mullagh, bringing a professional theatrical production into a local pub setting. [4]
