Place & story

People & connections

James Hoban’s Desart beginnings

James Hoban grew up on the Desart estate at Cuffe's Grange, where his father worked as a tenant farmer or estate labourer. He learned carpentry and wheelwrighting before attending the Dublin Society's drawing school. His later career in America culminated in designing and building the White House. The estate connection places his early practical training within the rural Kilkenny environment he knew before becoming an architect. [2]

People & connections

Denis Doyle and Kilkenny in Minnesota

Denis Doyle left Cuffesgrange for Minnesota in 1851 after working as a teacher at nearby Burnchurch. In his new settlement he established a shop and taught local children. He obtained a post office under the name Kilkenny in 1857 and served as its postmaster for thirty-one years. His later public roles included township clerk, county commissioner and a term as a Minnesota state representative in 1868. [3]

Holy Cross reaches two hundred years

Holy Cross Church opened in 1826. In August 2026 its bicentenary brought parishioners, former residents and clergy together for a thanksgiving Mass led by Bishop Ger Nash and parish priest William Hennessy. The celebration continued in the school hall, where people shared memories. The anniversary records the long community association with a building maintained and used by successive generations. [4]
