Place & story
Vevay House
The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage dates Vevay House to 1868. The two-storey house has a formal granite entrance portico, a central pediment and varied window surrounds. The inventory records its later use as a school and suggests that it may incorporate part of an earlier Oldcourt House. That possible older fabric remains a qualified interpretation. [2]
St Cronan’s on Vevay Hill
St Cronan’s traces its origins to parochial schools on Seapoint Road in 1820. Its own history dates the move to Vevay Hill to 1932, when the boys’ school adopted the Saint Cronan name. A new building within the grounds opened to pupils in November 1999. Gaelscoil Uí Chéadaigh subsequently occupied the older schoolhouse, continuing its educational use. [3]
Maintaining the local roads
Grand Jury presentments from the mid-1860s record payments to John Pluck for maintaining a stretch of road between Putland’s road from Newtown Vevay towards the sea and the turn of Novara. This small entry preserves the practical geography of the district: named roads, private landowners’ approaches and continuing expenditure on the routes linking the settlement with the shore. [4]
