Place & story

The house behind Manor Kilbride

The Manor, also known as Kilbride House, is a Tudor Revival country house dated to around 1840 by the architectural inventory. Gables, polygonal chimneys and battlemented parapets create its varied outline; an oriel window projects above the entrance. County Wicklow Heritage associates the estate with Sir Lorenzo Moore's purchase of the manor and lordship in 1824 and explains the village's longer name through that estate connection. [2] [3]

Granite for the capital

Quarrying at Goldenhills, northeast of the village, linked the locality with major building projects in Dublin. County Wicklow Heritage records granite from here in the Custom House, Four Courts and King's Inns. This history places local stoneworking within the growth of the capital, alongside the estate landscape and farming country around Kilbride. [3]

Ballyward Bridge and the 1986 flood

South of the village, Ballyward Bridge crosses the Liffey as it leaves its upland course towards Blessington. The heritage account dates the earlier bridge to 1813 and records its loss following the 1986 Hurricane Charley flooding, followed by rebuilding. The crossing illustrates the influence of the river on local routes, including the need to replace structures after destructive floods. [3]
