Place & story

The Church of the Immaculate Conception

The architectural inventory dates Ballinruan's Church of the Immaculate Conception to around 1860. Its L-shaped plan includes a three-bay range at the rear, while a corner porch was added during renovation in 1976. The building's modest scale and later alterations distinguish it from the parish's other church at Crusheen. Its fabric records an established place of worship adapted to changing requirements rather than replaced by a wholly new building. [2]

A school joins a wider catchment

The opening of Inchicronan Central National School at Crusheen in 1979 completed the amalgamation of three parish schools: Ballinruan, Drumbaniff and Crusheen. The receiving school's own information booklet records this sequence, alongside later extensions in 1994 and 2001. For Ballinruan, the change moved everyday primary education into a shared central institution. The history of its former school thus forms part of the development of schooling across the parish. [3]

Householders help shape a joint plan

In 2001 Ballinruan and Crusheen launched a community development plan prepared through consultation with householders. Reporting from the launch, The Irish Times described concern about both large housing developments and migration's effect on the communities. Minister of State Noel Davern praised the participatory approach, and representatives of other rural development groups attended. The project records an effort by the two villages to influence change through a common plan. [4]
