Place & story

Oysters and experimental cultivation

Bellharbour’s inlet was associated with the Pouldoody oyster beds. In the early twentieth century, fisheries inspector Ernest Holt used enclosures in nearby Muckinish inlet to compare the growth of oysters from different places. Cuan Beo’s heritage research records that silting led him to transfer this work to Ardfry. His experiments connect the small harbour with the development of scientific oyster cultivation. [2]

Corcomroe in the neighbouring valley

East of Bellharbour, Corcomroe Abbey preserves an early thirteenth-century Cistercian church. Its foundation is associated with the O’Brien family, although the founder and precise date remain debated. The Office of Public Works dates the surviving church to about 1210–1225 and identifies its carving with the regional School of the West. The abbey is a separate monastic site near the village, set among the Burren hills. [3]

People & connections

Chris Droney’s concertina tradition

Concertina player Chris Droney was born at Bellharbour in 1924 and learned tunes from his father James. Playing with neighbours, including John and Micko Linnane, took him to dances in Kinvara. His later career included Comhaltas tours abroad and performances with the Kilfenora and Four Courts céilí bands. The 2017 Fleadh’s musician profile records nine senior All-Ireland concertina titles and emphasises the importance of dance in his playing. [4]
