Place & story
A cottage with a castle-like plan
Araglin Cottage, in Billeragh East, is dated 1838 and was designed by Charles Frederick Anderson for Robert, Viscount Kingsborough. Despite its modest name, its Tudor Revival design includes turrets, battlements and an unusual plan recalling a medieval castle. The architectural inventory notes that decorative brackets spell out Anderson’s name, giving the building a particularly personal connection with its designer. [2]
The barracks raid of 1919
A participant’s Bureau of Military History statement describes the raid on Araglin’s Royal Irish Constabulary barracks on 20 April 1919. Michael Fitzgerald joined the local party, which entered while the sole constable present had gone to collect water. They removed four rifles, a revolver and ammunition. The account gives a concrete picture of the small local operation behind an early War of Independence arms seizure. [3]
Games, dances and the carnival
John and Nellie Donovan’s 2010 oral-history interview preserves memories of community recreation around Araglin, also written Araglen. John recalled a carnival established in the 1950s through cooperation between the hurling and football clubs, Muintir na Tíre and the hunt club. Together they remembered dances in the hall built in 1948, traditional music and the use of Tilley lamps. Their testimony places voluntary organisations at the centre of local social life. [4]
