The fighting of 19 March 1921
Crossbarry was the scene of an IRA breakout during the War of Independence. On 19 March 1921 British military and police converged on Ballymurphy in an operation against the 3rd Cork Brigade's active service unit. The IRA ambushed part of the approaching force at Crossbarry and escaped the encirclement. Military Archives links the action to brigade files and individual service records, while warning that accounts differ over the casualties on both sides.[2]
A memorial from 1966
The limestone memorial at Lissagroom was erected in 1966 and unveiled on 13 November of that year. A central cross with interlaced carving stands between panels inscribed in Irish and English. Relief carvings of a flaming sword and crossed rifles complete its imagery. The monument marks the memory of those who died in the 1921 engagement, adding a later layer of commemoration to the landscape of the fighting.[3]
An older river crossing
Crossbarry Bridge predates the revolutionary events by more than a century. The architectural inventory dates the three-arched stone road bridge to around 1790. Dressed limestone shapes its rounded arches, while pointed cutwaters project from the piers. Rubble and coursed stonework remain visible in the body of the bridge. This crossing in the village centre preserves another part of Crossbarry's history of routes and movement.[4]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
