Dripsey

An Druipseach

Dripsey's industrial settlements grew beside its river. A nearby failed ambush left a second, very different mark on local memory.

Place & story

Paper and wool beside the river

Batt Sullivan established Dripsey's paper works in 1784, using imported rags as raw material. Workers' housing developed nearby. Later, the woollen mills produced blankets, bedspreads and tweeds for overseas markets. Inniscarra Historical Society's account connects the Model Village with this industrial workforce: homes and employment grew together beside the river. [2]

People & connections

Andrew O’Shaughnessy and the castle landscape

Andrew O'Shaughnessy bought the woollen mills and nearby castle property in 1903. The older Carrignamuck tower house, also known as Dripsey Castle, belonged to the MacCarthy lordship of Muskerry. A later country house occupied its grounds, giving the estate a separate history of domestic building. [2]

The failed ambush and its memorial

On 28 January 1921 an IRA party preparing an ambush near Godfrey's Cross, between Dripsey and Coachford, was itself surrounded by Crown forces. University College Cork's fatality register records eight Volunteers captured; five were executed on 28 February, while James Barrett later died of his wounds. The episode is commemorated locally by a monument unveiled in 1938, designed by sculptor Séamus Murphy. It replaced an earlier wooden cross erected by Anne MacSwiney. The memorial gave permanent form to a loss still closely associated with the surrounding communities. [3] [4]
