Place & story
The village in 1837
Samuel Lewis's 1837 dictionary recorded 314 inhabitants and fifty-seven cabins at Castletown in Kinneigh parish. Livestock fairs were held on New Year's Day, Easter Tuesday, 12 May and 4 September, trading cattle, sheep and pigs. Lewis also described an earlier settlement that had declined after being sacked during the war of 1641; that explanation belongs to his nineteenth-century account. [2]
St Joseph's and its rediscovered altar stone
In November 2016, work on St Joseph's Church uncovered its original altar stone inside the altar assembled in 1991. Parish priest Tom Hayes reported that the stone bore Bishop William Delany's name and the date 1859, resolving local uncertainty over the church's dedication. After refurbishment, St Joseph's reopened on 10 September 2017. The work included a new entrance, improved access and the restoration of historic furnishings, including its nineteenth-century altar and Crucifixion painting. [3] [4]
