Place & story

The Savage tower house above the harbour

Portaferry Castle was built by the Savage family in the fifteenth or sixteenth century on a slope overlooking the harbour. The square tower house has a projecting southern tower containing stairs and latrines, while a small machicolation defended the entrance. Its floors were timber rather than stone-vaulted, and the surviving shell rises through three storeys and an attic. Its position within sight of Strangford and Audley’s castles places it among the fortified residences overlooking the waters of the lough. [2]

John Millar’s Presbyterian temple

Portaferry Presbyterian Church was built in 1840–41 after the previous meeting house was damaged by the Great Wind of January 1839. Architect John Millar designed a Greek Revival building with six-column Doric porticoes at front and rear, giving it an appearance unusually monumental for its narrow street setting. The church cost £1,999 and opened in September 1841. The historic buildings survey links the congregation’s classical tastes with the school established locally by minister William Steel Dickson, adding an educational context to the architectural choice. [3]

Renewing the Strangford crossing

The short ferry crossing remains an important connection between Portaferry and Strangford. In February 2017, the Department for Infrastructure introduced a new vessel built by Cammell Laird in Liverpool, replacing the ageing ferry constructed in 1969. Designed to carry both passengers and cars, it added a modern passenger lounge and updated marine engineering. This replacement continued a practical relationship between the two shores: the water separating them also provides a direct route linking their communities. [4]
