Place & story
A market journey remembered
In April 2012, Donegal Daily reported plans to revive the Glengad practice of walking geese from Ballynahona to Carndonagh mart. Culkeeny Post Office offered sponsorship of the eggs being incubated for the event. The newspaper presented the walk as a remembered local custom; its antiquity rests on the organisers’ account, rather than a dated historical record of its beginnings. [2]
The 2012 community walk
On 2 December 2012, a contemporary report described more than fifty geese setting out from Glengad towards Carndonagh for a charity sale. Spokesperson Sheila Smyth credited John McColgan of Culkeeny Post Office and friends with the idea. The fundraiser commemorated Tommy McCulgan and Angela Grogan, former classmates at Culkeeny school. Smyth said the custom had not been followed for seventy years; the report records the departure and intended sale, without confirming the eventual proceeds. [3]
