Place & story
A church endowed by the landlord
The site deed for Saint Margaret’s dates from 1864. The Reverend J. G. Porter, the local landlord, paid for the church, which was constructed during the 1860s. Its consecration was performed by Marcus Gervais Beresford, Archbishop of Armagh. In 2025 the congregation marked the 155th anniversary of that consecration. [2]
Welland and Gillespie’s Gothic design
The Church of Ireland’s architectural survey attributes Saint Margaret’s to Welland and Gillespie and dates the work to 1864–1870. Its design draws on Early French Gothic architecture. A tower and spire rise at the south-west corner, while gabled side windows and short transepts shape the body of the church. The east end has a five-light window with plate tracery; a rose window lights the west end. [3]
A memorial in coloured glass
The parish history identifies the Reverend Frances James Hurst as Clabby’s first rector, appointed in 1873. Under his direction an east window of stained glass was installed in memory of Porter. The window thus commemorates the patron whose gift had established the church, while recording the work of the first rector in completing its interior. [2]
