Place & story

Holy Trinity Church

Holy Trinity Church, also known as Tullowcreen Church, was built in 1846. The Church of Ireland building stands at Craanlusky on the Carlow side of the border locality. Its Tudor Revival design includes a battlemented entrance tower and granite details around the openings. Octagonal buttresses rise to pinnacles, giving the small church a distinctive outline. The architectural survey records surviving original pews inside, connecting the building’s interior with its nineteenth-century construction. [2]

Coal and sandstone at Old Rossmore

Nearby Old Rossmore preserves open pits, waste heaps and processing structures from coal mining and sandstone quarrying. The Geological Survey’s site report records underground mining in the early twentieth century and opencast extraction of the Marine Band coal seam during the 1980s. Sandstone was subsequently quarried. Exposed anthracite, shale and sandstone make the site important for understanding the eastern Leinster Coalfield. The report distinguishes this geological interest from visitor access: it identifies hazardous flooded quarry faces and considers the abandoned workings unsuitable for public promotion. [3]

Fossils from Bilboa Colliery

Bilboa Colliery is also represented in the Geological Survey’s scientific collections. Its fossil catalogue lists several specimens of Belinurus arcuatus from the colliery as syntypes, linking them with nineteenth-century published descriptions by William Hellier Baily and his colleagues. The records give individual collection numbers, allowing the original material to be traced beyond the mining site itself. They preserve a scientific legacy of the coalfield alongside the more visible remains of industrial extraction. [4]
