Place & story
A village along the road
Laois County Council describes Clough as a late eighteenth-century village northeast of Rathdowney. Its buildings form a dispersed settlement stretching between the church and school, with a community centre, graveyard and public house among its facilities. [2]
Saint Canice’s Church
The local heritage leaflet identifies George Coppinger Ashlin as the architect of Saint Canice’s. It records an 1871 foundation stone and a possible completion date of 1877. The Phelan family of San Francisco donated stained glass in 1875, made by Mayer & Co. of Munich: a connection between the parish and emigrants abroad. [3]
The Fitzpatrick memorial
A separate mortuary chapel was designed by A. W. N. Pugin in 1852 to house Richard Wilson Fitzpatrick’s tomb. After Pugin’s death, J. J. McCarthy supervised and completed the work, with Beardwood as builder. The Irish Architectural Archive records that the chapel was demolished, but its table memorial survives in the churchyard. [4]
