Place & story
A community crossing
The introduction to Memories of Eslin Bridge describes the crossing as the centre of a wider rural community. A church, school, creamery, grocery shop, post office and RIC barracks stood near it, alongside two dance halls, one on each side of the bridge. [2]
Sunday games and a championship
Brian and Enda Stenson’s tribute to clubman Timmie Shanley recalls young people gathering at the bridge on Sunday afternoons in the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s. During a tug-of-war in March 1971, Shanley urged them to train for a football trophy to display in the post office window. Eslin won that year’s junior championship, its first since 1942. [3]
