Place & story

Four postal days

On 22 June 1880, Major O’Beirne asked Parliament about residents’ request for daily post between Glenade village and Manorhamilton. Postmaster General Fawcett replied that the existing service linked Glenade with Kinlough four days a week and failed to cover its expenses. He offered no prospect of daily delivery. [2]

People & connections

Brian McEnroy and the Land League

Geraldine McGovern’s research identifies her great-grandfather Brian McEnroy as secretary of the Glenade Land League. He proposed a resolution at a demonstration in Glenade on 8 August 1880. Following a separate protest at Cleighragh, he was convicted of unlawful assembly and sentenced to three months with hard labour in March 1881. Released on 6 June, he resumed his local secretaryship.
