Place & story
Rebuilding after 1799
The parish history records that Askamore’s earlier church was burned in 1799. Its replacement, dedicated to St Brigid, was built in 1804 and has a T-shaped plan with round-arched doors and windows. Later additions contributed to its interior and surroundings: the oldest stained-glass window, the Stations of the Cross and the outdoor bell all date from 1932. The building therefore combines an early nineteenth-century structure with fittings added by later generations. [2]
The renovation of 1989
A major renovation directed by Albert Lennon brought a new granite altar, new tabernacles and a prayer chapel to St Brigid’s. Parish families gave five engraved windows representing the four Evangelists and St Brigid, together with new seating. The church reopened on 16 June 1989. A grotto erected that year commemorated people buried in the part of the cemetery where headstones had previously been removed to provide access to the church. [2]
A park and paths into the hills
Askamore’s community opened a village park in 2013. Coillte’s account describes its playground, picnic space, outdoor exercise equipment and a seven-circuit classical labyrinth, linked by a lit walkway. The church car park also serves as the starting point for woodland walking routes into the surrounding hills. These connect the village with Sliabh Gower and the slopes of Sliabh Bhuí, giving the settlement a role as a meeting point for local recreation. [3]
