Place & story
A castle transformed into a house
Glandore Castle occupies an elevated site above the bay. Its present appearance combines several building periods, including substantial nineteenth-century alterations. Battlemented entrance blocks and a tall tower stand beside a more conventional house wing with a central doorway. A gabled porch has small corner turrets and a pointed window. The architectural inventory records renovation around 1850: the building’s castle-like outline belongs to a long history of adaptation rather than a single construction campaign. [2]
Christ Church
Christ Church, Kilfaughnabeg, was built in 1859–61 to designs by Joseph Welland and Son. The Irish Architectural Archive records sixteen surviving drawings, signed by the practice, in the Representative Church Body Library. The small church has a three-bay nave, a south transept with a rose window, and a south-west tower and spire. The dedication date recorded on the drawings is 12 September 1861. [3]
Building a sailing club
Glandore Harbour Yacht Club was established in 1985, with Donal Lynch as its first commodore. Lynch and fellow sailor Cyril Kilgrew had promoted the idea of a club bringing together permanent residents and the harbour’s summer sailing community. Lynch later served a second term as commodore in 2004–05. His involvement with classic Dragon boats and, later, Squibs helped support the local fleets, giving the club a continuing connection with the smaller keelboats suited to the harbour. [4]
