Place & story

A textile workplace

Irish Tapestry Company (Drogheda) began operating at Yellowbatter in spring 1950. In his history of Drogheda’s industries, Brendan Matthews records cotton and rayon bedspreads and quilts as its principal products. The manager in the early 1950s was D. Hayward, a son of the writer and actor Richard Hayward. The factory placed textile production alongside the district’s growing residential life. [2]

The community centre

The Lourdes Community and Recreation Centre, also known as Yellowbatter Boys Club, served the surrounding neighbourhood for decades before closing in 2020. Refurbishment by the Drogheda Implementation Board and Louth and Meath Education and Training Board prepared it for renewed community use in 2023. The education board became licensee, and an April community event brought together adult learning, youth and family-support organisations. [3]

Evidence from the wider townland

Archaeological work for a wastewater network in the northern part of Yellowbatter townland uncovered a disturbed burnt mound in October 2025. The excavator, Glenn Gibney, reported charcoal and heat-affected stone, with two samples giving Late Bronze Age radiocarbon dates. No trough or underlying pits survived. This find belongs to the wider townland, north of Yellowbatter Park, and does not establish continuous occupation beneath the modern estate. [4]
