Place & story
Ulster connections in the parish
The wider Ballycroy parish has a distinctive history of migration from Ulster. Local historian Martin Costello describes families arriving after seventeenth-century confiscations, including O'Donnells, McSweeneys and O'Clerys. Nineteenth-century accounts still noted a northern dialect of Irish among their descendants. These connections help explain a cultural history that linked this western Mayo district with communities far to the north, rather than with its immediate neighbours alone. [2]
Successive school buildings
The local school's own history traces an earlier building at Drumslide to 1869. A replacement followed nearby in 1945. The present Scoil Naomh Bhríde in Ballycroy opened to pupils in August 2009 after construction began the previous year. Its formal opening by Taoiseach Enda Kenny took place in May 2011. The separate dates distinguish the start of teaching in the building from its later ceremonial opening. [3]
A gateway to Wild Nephin
Ballycroy's national-park visitor centre opened in 2009. Its exhibition introduces the surrounding landscape, while a short nature trail brings bogland, a pond and views of Achill and the Nephin Beg Mountains close to the village. The trail's name, Tóchar Daithí Bán, recalls a mythical giant associated with Corslieve. The centre connects the settled village with the much larger mountain and blanket-bog landscape of Wild Nephin. [4]
