Place & story
From beacon to lighthouse
The nearby Broadhaven lighthouse began with a Coast Guard request in 1843. George Halpin proposed a beacon tower that could later accommodate a light, but obtaining land delayed construction. By June 1848 the tower was complete. Local requests for a lighthouse and buoys to guide vessels towards Belmullet helped advance the scheme, and the light was finally established on 1 June 1855. [2]
A changing harbour light
The lighthouse stands at Gubbacashel Point in Ballyglass, guiding vessels past a submerged rock into sheltered water. Halpin also designed its keeper’s dwelling and store. Originally left as grey stone, the tower was painted white when the light changed to unattended acetylene operation in December 1931. Electric operation followed in September 1977. These alterations changed the means of producing the light while retaining its role at the harbour approach. [2]
Lifeboats at Ballyglass
The neighbouring Ballyglass lifeboat station was established on 17 October 1989 following a decision to test an all-weather service here. Its first boat, City of Bradford IV, came from the relief fleet and was replaced by Mabel Williams in 1990. A Severn-class lifeboat, Bryan and Gordon, entered service in August 1998. The station’s later development included an inshore service operating from a separate facility at Belmullet. [3]
