Place & story
Saint Joseph’s changing plan
Saint Joseph's Church is dated 1875 in the architectural inventory. Originally a single rectangular space, it acquired transepts that gave it a T-shaped plan. Narrow pointed windows, a vaulted timber ceiling and a high altar topped by a slender spire provide its Gothic details. Later alterations reordered the sanctuary. The building's development can therefore be read in its plan and interior, rather than assuming that everything visible belongs to the original nineteenth-century church. [2]
The development association
Midfield Development Association was formed in December 2007. Its early survey asked residents to identify local needs, including school improvements, village signs, road lighting and a community defibrillator. The association's account records subsequent projects ranging from place-name signage to support for music sessions and local activities. The survey and fundraising programme show a community attempting to decide its own priorities and turn them into practical improvements. [3]
The school hall appeal
In 2022 Saint Joseph's National School launched an appeal for a general-purpose hall. Planning permission had first been obtained in 2012, but funding remained unresolved. Principal Jackie O'Rourke explained that poor weather confined pupils to classrooms and limited physical activity. Parents formed a fundraising committee with a €200,000 target. The appeal documents a particular stage in the school's development; it does not establish whether the proposed hall was subsequently completed. [4]
