A parish community
Carrickroe forms the western district of Errigal Truagh parish, with its own church and school. The parish history places it alongside the districts of Ballyoisin and Clara. [2]
The Sacred Heart church
The Church of the Sacred Heart began in 1823 and was enlarged in 1885–1888 to designs by William Hague junior. Its cross-shaped plan brings nave, transepts and chancel together beneath roofs of matching height. The chancel and porches have exposed sandstone walls, contrasting with the rendered older parts; an 1886 datestone marks the chancel gable. A bell dated 1874 hangs in a limestone bell-cote. [3]
Surviving interior details
Although much of the interior was refurbished around 1980, the church retains its angled timber ceiling and historic stained glass. It stands in a graveyard on ground rising southwards, with memorial crosses to clergy near the chancel. [3]
