Place & story
The Crossroads congregation
Mountjoy’s Presbyterian congregation was formerly called Crossroads. Writing in 1886, William Dool Killen acknowledged uncertainty about its earliest history: he thought James Patton had been settled there in 1775. His firmer chronological account records James McClintock’s ordination at Cappagh on 24 May 1791. [2]
John Hamilton’s long ministry
John Hamilton was ordained as McClintock’s assistant on 6 November 1821. Killen records that John Gilmour became Hamilton’s assistant in September 1862, after Hamilton withdrew from active duties. Hamilton died on 18 June 1874. These overlapping ministries trace the congregation’s continuity through much of the nineteenth century. [2]
Thomas Mellon and the museum replicas
The Ulster American Folk Park identifies Mountjoy’s church as the place where Thomas Mellon worshipped as a boy. Its meeting house and neighbouring manse are replicas of the Mountjoy buildings, rather than the originals transferred from the village. The museum also preserves a post office and Victorian letterbox that once stood in Mountjoy. [3]
