Place & story

A church enlarged for the local community

Corrigeenroe’s church was erected in 1829 and enlarged in 1857 by Captain John Woulfe Flanagan of Drumdoe, according to the county graveyard survey. John McTernan’s family history relates the enlargement to the needs of Drumdoe tenants and the surrounding community. The survey places the church in Drumdoe townland, within Boyle civil parish and Aughanagh Catholic parish, and records a small adjoining burial plot with Woulfe-Flanagan memorials. [2] [3]

People & connections

The Woulfe-Flanagan burial place

The church grounds preserve later generations of this estate family as well. McTernan records the burial there of Stephen Woulfe Flanagan of Lecarrow Lodge, who died in January 1940, and his wife Emily, who survived him by four weeks. Their daughter Mary was buried in the family plot in 1987. These graves connect the church with households across the nearby Roscommon–Sligo border, rather than implying that every family member lived in the village. [3]

Folklore & tradition

A hall in the local dancing circuit

Kathleen Fitzmaurice’s memoir names Corrigeenroe among the villages with dance halls in the area around Highwood, Geevagh and Ballyfarnon. Remembering journeys by bicycle and the cost of admission, she describes how these halls linked neighbouring rural communities through music and dancing. Her account places Corrigeenroe within that social circuit, while distinguishing the modest local halls from the larger venues and carnival marquees that later attracted dancers farther afield. [4]
