Place & story

The schoolhouse dated 1883

The former national school at Ballynaraw South bears a plaque dated 1883, although an earlier school already appeared here on the first-edition Ordnance Survey map. Enda O'Flaherty's architectural field account describes adjoining classroom blocks with separate gabled entrance porches, preserving the division between boys' and girls' accommodation. His March 2016 visit recorded the building's disused condition and surviving painted interiors, rather than a functioning school. [2]

The club founded by Marren and O’Dowd

Andrew Marren and John O'Dowd founded Bunninadden GAA in 1886. The club won a senior county championship in 1891, but its second senior title came only in 2000, when a late goal by Padraig Doohan secured victory over Coolera Strandhill. The club's history also records the opening of its community park in 1995. Its sporting district extends beyond the village to Doocastle and Killavil. [3]

Pat Hunt’s playing career

Pat Hunt represented Bunninadden across a playing career stretching from the 1950s into the 1980s. The county association's tribute records his junior championship medals with the club in 1953, 1963, 1973 and 1979. He also played midfield for Mullinabreena's senior county champions in 1958 and represented Sligo in the Connacht senior championships of 1960–62. These achievements place a named local player within both club and county history. [4]
