Place & story
The lost wedge tomb
The national megalithic survey records a destroyed wedge tomb at Carrowneden, marked as a Giant's Grave on the 1914 Ordnance Survey map. It stood on pasture southwest of Coolaney. The survey considers that it may have included a portico, but the destruction limits what can now be established. Its recorded location preserves evidence of a prehistoric monument that is no longer standing. [2]
Other recorded settlement sites
The Record of Monuments and Places distinguishes the lost tomb from three other entries in Carrowneden: a hut site, a cashel and a ringfort. Their separate grid references place them within the wider townland rather than identifying one structure under several names. The inventory supplies classifications, but does not establish that the sites were contemporary or give dates for their occupation. [3]
The townland in the census
The 1901 census report lists Carrowneden under Branchfield electoral division in Achonry parish. It records 58 inhabitants, comprising 30 males and 28 females, in thirteen occupied houses. The same table gives populations of 76 in 1881 and 60 in 1891. These figures trace a declining rural population across two decades, without supplying the individual reasons for migration or household change. [4]
