Place & story
A school site renewed
St Patrick's National School opened in Geevagh in 1942. A replacement building opened on the same site in 2002, maintaining the location while providing new accommodation. In September 2023 it became the home of Scoil Ailbhe, formed by joining St Patrick's with St Joseph's National School, Kilmactranny. St Joseph's had served its community since 1932. The amalgamation brought two long-established schools together at the Geevagh site. [2]
Remembering the smaller schools
Earlier closures had already drawn pupils towards Geevagh. Mount Town school, opened in 1906, joined St Patrick's when it closed in 1973. St James' Well followed in 1977, after operating since 1893. Other amalgamations involved Highwood and Cloonagh before their pupils moved to Kilmactranny. Scoil Ailbhe commemorates this wider network with a plaque recording the schools that once served the parish of Geevagh, Highwood and Glenkillamey. [2]
A late championship victory
Geevagh defeated St Nathy's by 3–8 to 1–12 in the Sligo senior ladies' football championship final at Tubbercurry in September 2006. The contemporary association report records that Geevagh only took the lead during injury time. Substitute Nicola Sweeney scored the decisive goal, and Elaine O'Reilly added a point. Their late scores secured the Barton Smith Cup after a match in which the defending champions had led by six points at half-time. [3]
