Place & story
A small hamlet in Lower Ormond
Lewis’s 1837 dictionary records Ballinderry as a hamlet in Terryglass parish, in the barony of Lower Ormond. It then had seven houses and fifty-four inhabitants. The entry’s small scale is striking beside the substantial industrial buildings recorded later by the architectural inventory: village population alone does not convey the size of the mill complex associated with the place. [2] [3]
The Ballyfinboy mills
Ballinderry Mills combined water-powered milling with a former distillery beside the Ballyfinboy River. The architectural survey dates the complex to about 1820, with substantial additions around 1850. Its recorded buildings include a four-storey block with attic, taller six-storey sections, a filled millrace and the remains of further buildings around a large yard. The varied masonry records several phases of construction rather than a single finished scheme. [3]
Five arches across the river
The limestone bridge on the village’s south side dates to about 1790. Four principal river arches are accompanied by a southern flood arch, while pointed cutwaters face upstream on the western side. Its low arches and flaring parapets give a narrow road crossing a distinctive form. [4]
Making a local archive together
The Kilbarron Terryglass Historical Society began at a meeting in Ballinderry’s Pavilion on 12 July 2013. Its tenth-anniversary account describes residents sharing historical material, guest lectures and the continuation of talks online during the pandemic. Children from Kilbarron and Terryglass schools designed its logo, placing Ballinderry’s bridge among symbols from the surrounding villages. The choice made a practical road crossing an emblem of local memory. [5]
