Place & story

An early Presbyterian congregation

Carland Presbyterian Church traces its origins to the seventeenth century. The congregation occupies a rural site outside Dungannon, near the road to Cookstown. Its own account emphasises family connections extending across several generations. The church’s long institutional history places this small settlement within the early development of Presbyterianism in County Tyrone. [2]

People & connections

Thomas Kennedy’s return

Thomas Kennedy, Carland’s early minister, lost his living after the Restoration and continued his ministry at Carlan Bridge. R. W. Killen’s nineteenth-century history records that he later took refuge in Scotland. In 1691 the congregation sought his return, offering money, help with a dwelling and the ploughing and sowing of ten acres. Kennedy returned in 1693 and remained until his death in 1714. The offer reveals a community rebuilding both its religious organisation and its cultivated land after war. [3]

Keeping the school’s character

A contribution by Hanna Corry and Conall McQuaid to Carland’s 2016 school-history book describes the extension of St Mary’s Primary School’s offices, begun in 2005. The new frontage used Carland stone to respect the older building. Inside, the original numbered metal coat hooks were retained. Such details record how the school accommodated new needs while preserving familiar features remembered by earlier pupils. [4]
