Place & story
The monastic landscape
The Seir Kieran site at Clareen contains the remains of a medieval monastery, burials from several periods, an Anglo-Norman castle and a medieval settlement. The Irish Heritage School's account places these features within the longer monastic tradition associated with St Kieran. The site continued to be used through the medieval and later periods and remains a place of worship. [2]
Investigating and conserving the walls
Community research supported by the Irish Heritage School began in 2017, using laser scanning, geophysical survey and graveyard recording. Conservation of medieval walls followed between 2022 and 2024. During the 2022 work, archaeologists recorded architectural details exposed by ivy removal and a stone fragment that was left on site. This was conservation monitoring rather than a large excavation of the monastery. [2] [3]
A permanent home for hurling
Seir Kieran GAA traces its foundation at Clareen to 1887. Its first secretary, Frank Pilkington of Bell Hill, emigrated in 1895 and later served the Offaly club in New York. In October 1961 the local club acquired six acres beside Clareen crossroads for permanent playing facilities, giving a settled home to a team sustained through earlier decades of emigration and changing fortunes.
