Place & story
A family home recognised
Offaly County Council’s 2017 annual report identifies Carrigeen Farmhouse at Five Alley as the Hynes/Egan family home. After the owners contacted the heritage office, furniture historian Claudia Kinmonth assessed its unusually intact interior. Guided tours followed during Heritage Week. In 2018 the council supported a conservation plan by Lotts Architecture. [2] [3]
Remembering everyday work
Pupils from Scoil Náisiúnta Naomh Eoin recorded visiting the farmhouse and interviewing Mr and Mrs Egan. At the hearth, Mr Egan recalled his mother baking bread and cooking over the open fire. The school’s first-hand visit account also remembers the house as a gathering place for cards, storytelling, music and dancing. [4]
