Place & story
The stone-built linen mill
The former Brookfield Flax Spinning Mill stands on Crumlin Road, its four-storey stone walls relieved by brick window surrounds. The official Heritage at Risk record dates its establishment to 1851 and records more than 1,400 looms and 35,000 spindles. Its scale preserves a substantial reminder of Belfast's linen industry. The same record identifies the mill as unlisted, despite its importance in the city's industrial landscape. [2]
Brookfield Business School
A parliamentary answer in January 1998 records Brookfield Business School operating within the mill complex. Under the Flax Trust's umbrella, it offered Jobskills training for young people and adults in catering, information technology, welding and business administration. Paul Murphy's ministerial response documented public funding for this work, establishing a later educational role for premises whose original purpose had been industrial production. [3]
Converting the mill into homes
Clanmil's housing conversion preserved the exterior stonework while reorganising the interior into 77 homes. The scheme comprised 55 two-bedroom apartments and 22 duplex homes, with residents moving in during 2022. A celebration in September 2023 marked the official opening by Belfast's Lord Mayor, Ryan Murphy. The redevelopment gave the former mill another sustained use, following its earlier industrial and educational roles. [4]
