Place & story
A congregation for a new estate
Craigy Hill’s Presbyterian congregation began as the Larne housing estate developed. Its own history traces the beginning to December 1955, when fourteen children and a small group of adults met with the Reverend Bill Boyd in a builder’s hut. Worship moved to a wooden hall on Linn Road and subsequently to a permanent church on Churchill Road. The chosen site lay between the Craigy Hill and Antiville estates. [2]
Children’s contributions and the Getty Hall
Sunday schools and youth organisations across the Presbyterian Church in Ireland helped finance the new church, contributing almost £20,000. The later Getty Memorial Hall opened in 1967. Its funding included compensation for a demolished mission hall in Larne’s Mill Street area, which had itself benefited from the nineteenth-century bequest of John Getty. [2]
