Place & story

A road older than its recorded name

Shaw’s Road connects the Falls Road and Glen Road in west Belfast. Research published by Belfast Street Names identifies its alignment on the first Ordnance Survey map of the 1830s, when it appeared without a name. The junction with Stewartstown Road was subsequently rearranged, changing which route appeared to continue straight ahead. The same research leaves the origin of the name Shaw unresolved, rather than identifying a particular landowner or resident. [2]

Building an Irish-speaking neighbourhood

In 1969 a group of Belfast families established homes together on Shaw’s Road to create an environment in which Irish could be spoken in ordinary family and community life. Known as Pobal Feirste, the community also needed schooling through Irish as its children grew older. Parents founded a primary school in 1971, initially for nine school-age children. Its intake subsequently extended beyond the families living in the original community. [3]

Recognition and a wider intake

The school operated under parental management while seeking official recognition, facing the possibility of prosecution as an unregistered institution. In 1978 a preschool immersion programme began to help children from English-speaking homes acquire Irish before entering primary education. Maintained status followed in 1984, bringing public financial support. These developments connected the Shaw’s Road housing initiative with the expansion of Irish-medium schooling beyond its original neighbourhood. [3]
