Place & story
The Irwins’ Carnagh estate
William Irwin received an estate at Carnagh in 1680. The Landed Estates Database traces the family's interests across the Armagh–Monaghan border and records William Arthur Irwin of Carnagh House holding 1,516 acres in County Armagh in 1876. Surviving estate papers include rentals, accounts and maps from 1718 to 1890. A separate 1850 map depicts Carnagh House, its demesne and farm. [2]
De la Cherois Thomas Irwin
The Royal Canadian Artillery Museum records Colonel De la Cherois Thomas Irwin's birth at Carnagh on 31 March 1843. Commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1861, he reached Canada during the military preparations surrounding the Trent affair. His battery travelled from Saint John to Montreal by sleigh in February 1862. His later career included service as an assistant inspector of artillery and military stores for the Dominion. [3]
The forest and its recorded boulder
Carnagh Forest is predominantly conifer woodland near Keady. Its lakes add another feature to the wooded landscape, with an official fisheries record describing a four-hectare waterbody and a path around it. The forestry-plan archaeological appendix also identifies a boulder in Crossnenagh as a recorded folklore site within the forest. The entry establishes the boulder's classification, but supplies no particular legend to retell. [4] [5] [6]
