Place & story
The church already ruined in 1836
The 1836 Ordnance Survey name books describe Carrickaboy’s church as already in ruins, with its southern side fallen. The surveyors thought the plain building would once have held about two hundred people. They noted fragments of its construction and the larger stones used at the corners. This is evidence of the site’s condition in the nineteenth century, rather than a claim that the same walls remain standing today. [2]
Farming the bishop’s glebe
The name-book entry for Carrickaboy Glebe records land belonging to the Bishop of Kilmore, occupied by twelve tenants at will. Annual rents ranged from twenty to thirty shillings per acre, with additional county cess and tithes. The soil was described as rocky, producing oats and flax. Such details give a specific picture of local farming and tenure before the Famine, alongside the area’s church remains and burial traditions. [2]
Denn Church nearby
At nearby Denn Glebe, the Church of Ireland church was built in 1817 with support from the Board of First Fruits and money raised through parish assessment. Its tower has battlements and ball-topped pinnacles, while a hipped roof gives the nave an unusually compact profile. A vestry followed in 1868. The architectural inventory also records a former school across the road, placing worship and education together in this small historic group. [3]
