Place & story
Cutting stone and building boats
A water-powered mill described by Samuel Lewis in 1837 cut and polished stone and marble for fireplaces, paving slabs and other products. His Killaloe account records about one hundred men employed at the works and slated cottages provided nearby for workers. Beside the mill was a boatbuilding yard belonging to the Shannon Steam Navigation Company. The company carried passengers and goods through Lough Derg to towns upriver, connecting local manufacture with the Shannon’s transport network. [2]
