Place & story
A permanent pitch
Castlelyons GAA bought its Abbeylands pitch in 1968, after years of renting a field. Levelling the sloping ground required borrowing and county-board assistance. GAA president Pat Fanning opened the pitch in 1971, when Cork played Clare. The club’s histories agree on the year but give different June dates. [2] [3]
The community centre
A parish meeting in September 1971 led to a combined hall and dressing-room project. In Kieran McGann’s 2021 retrospective, construction began in May 1972: a paid builder worked by day and volunteers continued in the evenings. Later facilities included two squash courts. The centre served social events as well as games. [2]
Farmers financing the building
To reduce the building debt, the organisers bought cattle and placed them with parish farmers, who kept them free for six months before resale. The club’s account describes a three-year fundraising scheme, supported by concerts, festivals and emigrant contributions. This was a particular community project, rather than evidence of an ancient local custom. [2]
