Place & story
A platform with women pushed back
Anna Parnell addressed a Ladies’ Land League meeting at Castletown Kinneigh on 1 May 1881. Liz Padmore’s published compilation reproduces the speech reported in the Cork Examiner the following day. Parnell began by reproaching the men for crowding women away from the platform and asked them to remain quiet so those farther back could hear. Her remarks show that even a meeting convened for the women’s organisation could leave its members struggling for access to their own speaker. [2]
Practical resistance to eviction
The speech urged members not to hire their vehicles to police, bailiffs or process-servers carrying out eviction-related work. Parnell also called for neighbours to cultivate the land of imprisoned Land Leaguers, with women taking over if men failed to act. These were instructions she advocated at the meeting; the report does not demonstrate that particular Castletown families subsequently carried them out. [2]
