Place & story
The island school
Dursey Island National School, in Kilmichael townland, was built in 1891. Its single-storey stone building has a gabled entrance porch and a slate roof. Red-brick arches frame the windows, while a carved limestone plaque marks the porch. Timber sash windows, decorative iron vents and an interior limestone fireplace are among the details recorded by the architectural survey. [2]
Separate playgrounds
Two outbuildings survive behind the school, on either side of a dividing wall. The wall separated the boys’ and girls’ playgrounds. These modest structures and boundaries add evidence of the school’s everyday organisation to the more conspicuous classroom building. [2]
