Place & story
Newmarket House through changing uses
The 1943 Irish Tourist Association survey, as summarised by the University of Galway, records that the Aldworth family left Newmarket House during the War of Independence. Crown forces occupied the building, followed by the Free State Army. The Sisters of St Joseph bought it in 1927. It later became the James O'Keeffe Memorial Centre. [2]
Island Wood and the Twelve Apostles
Island Wood was formerly part of the Aldworths' Manor of Newmarket. IRD Duhallow identifies the woodland with Island townland, between the Dalua and Rampart waterways. Among its landmarks is the Twelve Apostles tree, named for twelve stems branching from its main trunk. Paths through the former estate woodland now provide a different way of encountering this landscape. [3]
The market building becomes a hall
The former court and market house at Main Street and Chapel Street dates to around 1810. Five ground-floor arches supported an upper storey, following a familiar arrangement for such buildings. Its limestone front survives, although the arcade has been enclosed and windows replaced. The architectural inventory records its later use as a hall. [4]
