Place & story
The terms of a renewed lease
Henry Blackall’s study of the Galwey estate papers records a lease dated 23 February 1788 to John O’Mullane. For a £1,000 payment and £90 annual rent, he received Whitechurch’s 535 acres, one rood and thirty perches for the lives of three named sons, with a covenant allowing perpetual renewal. The document concerns a leasehold within the Galwey estate, rather than outright ownership. [2]
A connection traced through later papers
A 1772 estate deed had named John Mullane and his under-tenants in possession of Whitechurch. By the Galwey marriage settlement of 1818, the corresponding lands were described as formerly occupied by him and his under-tenants. Blackall connected this family with Catherine O’Mullane, Daniel O’Connell’s mother, while distinguishing their temporary Whitechurch holding from the O’Mullanes’ ancestral property elsewhere. [2]
