Place & story

A district beyond the long street

The Convoy area’s historical institutions served more than the village alone. Lewis’s 1837 account describes a parish separated from Raphoe in 1825, taking in Cornagillagh as well as Convoy village and reaching towards Cark mountain in the north-west. This was a historical ecclesiastical territory rather than the modern electoral division’s boundary. The distinction helps explain why local accounts connect Convoy with a wider network of settlements and rural schools. [2]

Schools supported by several communities

A grant from Colonel Robertson’s fund helped support Convoy’s parochial school, according to Lewis. Seven other public schools operated in the parish, with more than five hundred children taught across the eight schools. He also recorded four Sunday schools, alongside Presbyterian and Covenanter meeting houses and a Catholic chapel near the village. These institutions formed a network of education and religious life extending through the surrounding countryside. [2]

John McIntyre’s work at the manse

Convoy’s Presbyterian manse began around 1830 but was extensively altered in 1907 to designs by engineer John McIntyre. The heritage survey considers its full-height projecting bay windows likely additions from that work. A pediment frames the central doorway, while decorative timber bargeboards mark the small gable above. McIntyre also designed the nearby Presbyterian church built in 1903, linking the two buildings through a later phase of local church investment. [3]
