Place & story

The station at the Pound

An account from Inishowen Maritime Museum’s archives identifies pilot stations at Stroove and Greencastle on an 1833 chart. Around 1884, the Tremone Bay station moved to the Inishowen Head area. Its new base, called the Pound, stood west of Dunagree Point, and the pilot boat launched from a beach below. The watch house was destroyed during Hurricane Debbie in 1961. [2] [3]

Keeping watch for incoming ships

The same museum account describes a signal station on Inishowen Head and a later pilot base at Port Sallagh, Stroove. The pilots’ shore network served ships approaching the Foyle, while local lookout arrangements also informed Derry shipowners when their vessels arrived offshore. These working places connected the coast beyond Greencastle village with the commercial traffic entering the lough. [2]
